In the grand scheme of things, sport has been impacted minimally by Hurricane Sandy, but the Green Bay Packers may be the hardest hit long term, while more immediately, the NBA debut of the Brooklyn Nets could be delayed.

The Nets are readying for their first NBA showdown since moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn, with the New York derby with the Knicks set to be played at the new $1 billion Barclays Center.

However, a suspension to the New York subway system, which runs directly to the Center, is threatening to make life difficult for fans wishing to attend.

Meanwhile, the Knicks have already had to cancel practice ahead of the game.

Over in the NFL, the hurricane is posing a different problem and one that may end up costing the Green Bay Packers a chance at the Super Bowl.

The Packers are currently 4/1 to win the NFC and 8/1 to win the Super Bowl for the second time in three years.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings is a vital part of the team’s attacking unit, but recently suffered a hernia injury that requires surgery.

But the grounding of flights in some US locations has delayed this surgery and the longer it is delayed, the longer he will be absent.

It is known that he will miss at least three weeks following the surgery, even if it is a success.

Another issue for the NFL to sort has been that surrounding its trading deadline.

The decision has been taken to push the deadline back to November 1st as it has proved impossible to finalise paperwork with New York offices closed.

Further commotion can be expected in the NBA where flights will need rescheduling, while entrants in the New York marathon and Breeders Cup horse racing may also encounter travel obstacles.

One such horse is 7/4 favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Shanghai Bobby, who will be travelling later than initially planned.
