This Addleshaw Goddard Stakes is a tough race to call with 20 runners all heading to post, and considering the favourite is currently 8/1, there are plenty of winning chances.

However, only twice in the last 10 years has a horse from outside of the first three in the betting one, and while the favourite has only won this race twice in the last 10 years, it’s usually the classier horses who take the title.

Markazzi (7/1), Pintura (8/1), Harrison George (9/1) and Mont Angel (9/1) will all be battling for favouritism and we’re likely to see the favouritism exchange hands throughout the day and in the build-up to the race.

Both Pintura and Mont Angel make our shortlist on the basis of trends and we’re concentrating on these two runners, although we also like Masked Dance (25/1) at a bigger price although questions remain over his stamina.

There are no question marks over Pintura’s stamina having raced six times over today’s mile long trip and in his two trips over the mile track at York racecourse, he has finished fourth and second.

A third place in the Totesport mile at Glorious Goodwood means David Simcock’s four-year-old comes here in strong form and he’s certainly one to consider today.

However preference is for Michael Bell’s Mont Angel who will be ridden by Tom Queally.

Bell has a 40 per cent strike rate from the last 14 days with six winners from 15 runners and in the last five seasons he has sent 45 horses to York and come home with the winner on eight occasions.

Mont Angel’s form doesn’t read brilliantly on paper but bum draws have not helped his cause in his last three start, and his second place at York on his first start of the season is truer form.

The draw has a big impact on this race with 8 of the last nine winners coming from stalls 1-12, and drawn 8, Mont Angel looks a strong pick today.
