The Champion Chase is the feature race of the Punchestown Festival and punters are in for a real treat with a Cheltenham Festival rematch on between Sizing Europe and Big Zeb.
The two horses cannot be split at the head of the Champion Chase betting with both jostling for favouritism at 2/1, but it’s Sizing Europe’s love of the better ground and the Punchestown track that makes him the pick in our book.
Six horses line up in for the Champion Chase with Captain Cee Bee and last year’s winner Golden Silver both hoping to upset the two market leaders, while the two outsiders J’Y Vole (14/1) and Changing Course (125/1) unlikely to feature prominently.
Captain Cee Bee is currently trading at 4/1 with Golden Silver available at 5/1, but a worrying stat for Captain Cee Bee and fans of Big Zeb is that only one 10-year-old has won the race in the last 14 runnings.
Big Zeb has finished second on his last two starts behind both Sizing Europe and Golden Silver and with the 10-year-old stat a huge negative against Colm Murphy’s star, we’re backing Sizing Europe and Golden Silver to battle for first and second.
Five of the last seven winners failed to place in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and having finished fourth this year, Golden Silver once again enters the race with this as a positive.
But of the Queen Mother Champion Chase winners to take part in this race, only Moscow Flyer has failed to do the double in the last 15 years.
With four wins from eight runnings at Punchestown Sizing Europe certainly knows his way around the Irish track and having shown the better form on the harder ground, two of his Punchestown wins have come on good ground, the Henry De Bromhead star can claim victory.
