The British sporting summer has its fair share of highlights and Newmarket’s July Festival is up there with the best in terms of the excitement it generates amongst the viewing public.

This year’s meeting is set to be no different and, as you’d expect, we’ll be providing you with our top tips for the three-day event.

It all kicks-off with a trio of Group contests on the Thursday with the Princess of Wales’s Stakes your highlight.

Get stuck in and enjoy another cracking dose of this…

Money Back if 2nd or 3rd to the SP Favourite in Channel 4 races!*

Plus, we’re also paying 5 places on the 15:45 and watch out for our Show Jumper Boosts throughout the afternoon.

Here’s our take on the opening day of the July Festival…

NAP – Prize Money – 14:10 Newmarket

We’re backing Godolphin’s Prize Money all the way to the bank in this one with his runner-up placing at Royal Ascot behind subsequent Eclipse winner Hawkbill looking rock solid.

This step up in trip shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the Saeed bin Suroor-trained charge and neither should the drying ground.

The progressive Shabeeb is a threat, as is Housesofparliament. But there’s only one horse we’re truly taken with and he’s our lock of the day.

NB – The Grey Gatsby – 15:15 Newmarket

Depending on which side of the fence you’re sitting on, this is either a no-brainer or a leap of faith for a horse potentially on the downgrade.

As you may have guessed we’re leaning towards the former opinion!

The Grey Gatsby is a proven Group 1 winner and while his recent effort at Royal Ascot was sub-par, he should still be a very real contender given his previous history.

There’s no hiding place for Kevin Ryan’s star but with question marks also surrounding Exosphere we’re keeping the brilliant grey on-side.

Lively Longshot – General Macarthur – 17:30 Newmarket

Aidan O’Brien won this race two years ago with Table Rock and we like the look of his outsider General Macarthur on this occasion.

Granted, he’s not a 4/1 shot like his yard’s previous victor but we expect him to outrun his larger odds at HQ.

A winner over a mile at Navan last time out, the son of War Front comes into this contest very much under the radar and ready to cause an upset.
