The Ebor Festival at York may be just around the corner. But this weekend there’s live racing from Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon to whet the appetite.

It’s the Hungerford Stakes that tops the bill, as Librisa Breeze and Breton Rock do battle over 7f.

ITV are showing seven lives races throughout the afternoon, and we’ve got you covered for each contest.

NAP – Defoe – 14:25, Newbury

Two in-form jockeys go head-to-head in the Hungerford Stakes as Jim Crowley, on board Frontiersman, takes on Andrea Atzeni, who gets the leg up on Defoe. We like the latter to take the contest.

Roger Varian’s stable has been in excellent form this season and Defoe himself has won three on the spin, most recently at Hamilton. Crucially however, Defoe will prefer the ground. And with rain having fallen at Newbury in the past day or so, things are boding well for the three-year-old.

Frontiersman does have more experience at this level, but we can’t see past Defoe as he bids for a successful boost to his St Leger credentials.

NB – Breton Rock – 15:35, Newbury

A surprise 50/1 winner at Glorious Goodwood earlier this month, Breton Rock is another one who will relish the ground at Newbury.

The David Simcock-trained seven-year-old saw off the re-opposing Librisa Breeze that day and we reckon he should be able to go again in the Hungerford Stakes.

Breton Rock enjoys this course and won here in 2014, so it seems a no-brainer to back the gelding to become the first dual winner of this race since Jimmy Reppin in 1969.

Lively Longshot – Sir Roderic – 15:00, Newbury

Now, you have to look past the recent form for this one.

Sir Roderic hasn’t enjoyed his time in Class 2 company, but back down to Class 3 for this one we think he’ll improve and is certainly worth an each-way shout.

His last three runs in this grade are testament to that, with form of 3-1-1 suggesting his current odds are well overpriced.
