The Cheltenham Festival may be over for another year but the top racing keeps on coming with the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter this Saturday’s highlight.

The feature contest of the afternoon is always a big betting heat and early indications are this year’s renewal will be no different.

However, what is perhaps a little surprising is the sustained interested being show in one particular runner.

The 10-year-old veteran Mad Brian has been all the rage as far as our customers are concerned with floods of money coming for the Irish charge.

On recent form you wouldn’t give the Gillian Callaghan-trained gelding much of a chance.

A fall in the last over hurdles on his previous appearance at Navan was preceded by a relatively tame effort at Naas back in January.

Admittedly, that was his first outing in over two years but there’s been little to suggest a return to the sort of form that once merited a run-out in the Grade 1 Topaz Chase at Leopardstown.

Slightly better ground should suit this weekend but the jury is very much out on whether Mad Brian can rekindle former glories.

Meanwhile, other Midlands Grand National entries include last year’s Irish National-third, Sizing Coal, and the progressive Devon National winner, Fourovakind.

Multiple National winner Golden Chieftain is another to look out for although like his aforementioned rival, age is not on his side.

No horse aged 10 or older has triumphed in this contest since 1995 and it appears only an almighty effort will buck that trend.
