The Ed McMahon-trained filly Winning Express finished third behind Qipco 1000 Guineas rivals Hot Snap and Sky Lantern in the recent Nell Gwyn Stakes. However, punters shouldn’t shy away from her based solely on that piece of form.

Having been squeezed out by the re-opposing duo earlier in the month, McMahon has issued different riding instructions to jockey Franny Norton.

And the return at Newmarket could see Norton adopt a change of strategy in a bid to avoid trouble and land victory at 16/1.

The talented three-year-old followed up an impressive Cheveley Park Stakes second with that spirited Nell Gwyn performance on her seasonal reappearance.

Staying on gamely, Winning Express showed the step up in trip did not faze her and the extra furlong of The Rowley Mile needn’t be off-putting.

For fans of trends a punt on the McMahon charge is a viable proposition.

Only three of the last ten winners have gone off as favourite with seven of the last ten victors coming in at double figure odds.

The 10/1 about Fred Darling Stakes winner Maureen is another eye-catching price.

With seven of the last ten renewals being taken by a filly who’d triumphed last time out there’s plenty to support her claims.

Each-way backers could also find the 20/1 Snow Queen obliging with trainer Aidan O’Brien bidding for consecutive 1000 Guineas wins and a third race victory in total.

Jockey Ryan Moore takes the ride, exactly like he did for 2012 winner Homecoming Queen, having recently won the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot.

Although, it’s the words of O’Brien’s son Joseph that are perhaps more telling.

With regards to Snow Queen’s chances, he said she “has a lot of ability and might be a bit better on a straight track.”

The potential value in this year’s renewal is clear with Winning Express one of a few entries capable of delivering plentiful rewards should the trend for big price winners continue.
