It was indeed a Glorious Goodwood festival, with the Sussex track showcasing five cracking days of equine action as the flat season switches focus from flying three-year-olds to callow newcomers.
You didn’t have to look too closely to pick up a few clues ahead of next summer’s main events, and there was a nod towards the last Classic of the year in one of the week’s tightest finishes.
Ivawood is the best two-year-old Richard Hannon has in training
The 2014 2000 Guineas-winning trainer with Night of Thunder stopped just short of heaping the ultimate praise on his unbeaten son of Zebedee.
Hannon junior stated after Ivawood’s in no way flattering four-and-a-half length win in the Group 2 Richmond stakes:
“I would say he is one of the best two-year-olds we have.” I don’t like to say he is the best, but he is up there. He’s very sound and will have one or two more races this year.”
Ivawood is 8/1 to hand Hannon a second successive 2000 Guineas win at Newmarket next year.
Highland Reel is the furthest along of Aidan O’Brien’s 2015 Derby contenders
The Ballydoyle maestro has taken the last three Derbys and dropped a huge hint as to his thinking for next summer’s renewal with this Galileo colt in Sussex.
Highland Reel made it two wins from three starts and with some style, seeing off Tupi by more than two lengths and earning a 12/1 quote for Epsom’s main event in the process.
Hartnell is a live contender for the Ladbrokes St Leger, despite not running at Goodwood
Snow Sky and Windshear’s uber-close 1-2 in the Gordon Stakes worked out extremely well for Mark Johnston’s Authorized colt, who had the latter behind him at Royal Ascot and lost out by two lengths to the former at a Lingfield Derby trial that was a tad sharp for him back in May.
Hartnell is a top-price 8/1 to win the St Leger at Doncaster in September, and with 5/1 jolly Kingston Hill far from certain to get the 1m6f trip, the Johnston three-year-old is in with a fair shout.
