In honour of jockey Richard Hughes’ planned departure from the riding scene immediately after Glorious Goodwood, Ladbrokes have boosted the price on the 42-year-old getting a winner on the board in West Sussex from 1/10 to 3/1.*
You can have a whole £10 on ‘Hughesy’ at these odds, which is a serious giveaway from the bookies considering the book of rides Richard Hannon junior has lined up for his brother in law.
Having been on board for eight of Toormore’s 11 career starts, taking in three of the colt’s four wins including at Goodwood two years ago, Hughes is likely to get the call should he go in either the Lennox or Sussex Stakes.
Tupi is also entered in the latter, after winning for the second time in three runs since mid-May under the Dubliner last time out at Newmarket, but having won the Stewards Cup four times, including 12 months ago on Intrinsic, he’ll also fancy his chances in the big handicaps.
Partnering with Richard Hannon senior secured Hughes the Group 2 Vintage Stakes in four consecutive Glorious Goodwoods earlier this decade, while also mopping up fellow two-year-old test the Group 2 Richmond Stakes between 2008-11, which was landed by the new pairing’s Ivawood last year.
Hughes has been booting home a steady stream of winners in recent weeks, with seven between July 10-23, three of them for Hannon, so he’s clearly still got the ability to get over the line, despite his body clearly telling him otherwise.
Of the current crop of riders on the Flat circuit, only Frankie Dettori has more Glorious Goodwood winners than Hughes’ 54 in his back catalogue, and the man exiting the stage on England’s south coast took the top jockey title at four consecutive festivals from 2010-2013.
