Galway Races: Murtagh’s Dalkova to upset the odds on day four

News.Ladbrokes’ Galway Races NAP Most Peculiar romped home at Ballybrit yesterday, and we’re back in the hunt for profits on the Atlantic coast ahead of a fourth helping of flat and jumps action.

Remember, if your horse finishes second to any Dermot Weld winner during the festival, Ladbrokes will refund your losing stake up to £/€25*.

NAP – 3.40 – Dalkova @ 10/1

Weld’s Tested will be all the rage in this 7f event having won three of four starts, but the three-year-old hasn’t been mixing it with the very best and feels a bit short in the betting.

Former Classic-hoovering jockey-turned-trainer Johnny Murtagh only has three horses at Galway, and Dalkova looks about the best of them.

The five-year-old’s official and unofficial ratings aren’t far off the shorter-priced runners in this field, and after winning at 4/1 and failing narrowly at 14/1 in her last two starts, the Murtagh mare gets the prize pick.

NB – 2.20 – Usa @ 5/1

In spite of Steven Mahon’s gelding’s horrible record at this course, where he has never placed higher than ninth in four attempts, we just can’t get away from Usa.

Barry Geraghty has only ever been on board the seven-year-old three times and he’s banked two wins and a second in decent fields, including when triumphing last time out at Roscommon.

In a six-runner race against an unspectacular short-priced favourite, in Alelchi Inois, Usa gets the nod.

Lively Longshot – 4.55 – Midnight Game @ 50/1

We’re heading for the handicaps in search of punting gold, so a decent trend as a pointer is required.

It just so happens that only one of the last 10 winners of this triumphed in their previous run, which narrows our in-form group down considerably.

The way to make this stat pay could be through Midnight Game, a massive outsider due to a poor run last time out.

Gordon Elliot’s charge finished second to useful types Lord Ben, Cailin Annamh and Falcarragh in successive runs earlier in the season and might be better weighted for this 2m hurdle than her recent shocker suggests.
