The ultra competitive Caspian Caviar Gold Cup is on the horizon and we’ve cast our eye over the key facts and trends ahead of the 2016 renewal.

Cheltenham is the venue for the 2m5f contest with Aloomomo and Bouvreuil currently the joint-favourites at 6/1 apiece.

Will one of the aforementioned pair land the Grade 3 prize?

At six and five years-old respectively the omens are good. Only three of the previous 10 winners were aged eight or over with horses between six and eight winning nine of the last 10 renewals.

And as the runners get older the trends make for even bleaker reading.

Horses aged nine or older have no wins and just two places from 45 runners stretching back 13 years.

That potentially rules out the likes of Village Vic and Taquin Du Seuil with Buywise, Tenor Nivernais, Module and Turban also falling foul.

However, one saving grace for Taquin Du Seuil is the fact that BetVictor (formerly Paddy Power) Gold Cup winners do have a respectable recent record in this race with that contest producing two winners and two placed horses in the last decade.

A classy type like Jonjo O’Neill’s charge is not to be sniffed at but it’s worth bearing in mind that the last five winners were rated between 133 and 145.

Harry Fry’s Thomas Brown fits into that category while Nicky Henderson will be hoping his Full Shift can replicate the form that saw him finish fourth at the Festival back in the spring.

If you’re looking at certain trainers then it’s wise to follow Paul Nicholls. The Ditcheat saddler has had enjoyed winners in 2009, 2010 and 2012 with either a winner or placed horse in eight of the last 11 runnings.

That brings us back to Bouvreuil, as well as Frodon, with preference for the former.

Although, our best bet for the Caspian Caviar Cup is for a horse trained by Venetia Williams.

The 2014 winning trainer is set to saddle ASO at Prestbury Park, a six-year-old with an official rating of 144.

Oh, and having finished fourth in last month’s big race in Gloucestershire, there’s plenty to like.

Throw in the fact that French bred horses have won six of the last 11 runnings and you’ve got yourselves a bona fide contender.
