Speed was potentially never going to be a problem for Sadler’s Risk and a promising hurdling debut has seen him shoot to the top of the market for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Sadler’s Risk was a more than adequate horse on the flat, finishing within four lengths of the Derby runner-up Treasure Beach in the Chester Vase in May.

He now seems to be more than an adequate horse over hurdles, given the way he demolished the opposition on his debut over obstacles at Kempton.

Although his rivals were not arguably of the strongest calibre, Sadler’s Risk blasted clear after rounding the home turn and without ever truly being asked for a major effort from Richard Johnson, triumphed by 17 lengths.

The class of this performance ensured that Sadler’s Risk was cut to just 7/1 in the Cheltenham odds to win the Triumph Hurdle and it is hard to contest that he does not possess the best flat form of all of the expected runners.

However, punters may be better to wait as his next preparation race ahead of the Festival is likely to be at Cheltenham in the coming weeks, which will offer some valuable insight into how well he copes with the undulations at the track.

Meanwhile, even if he runs well at Cheltenham and wins, it is unlikely that his price will shorten much from 7/1.

Therefore, punters wanting to make the most of ante-post prices may want to look elsewhere in the Triumph Hurdle odds.

Grumeti looked a natural hurdler on his debut and will generate some appeal at 12/1, but the interesting runner looks to be Irish-trained Minsk at 10/1.

A decent performer on the flat for John Oxx, which included a success in the Irish Cesarewitch, Minsk is still to make his anticipated hurdling debut for Dessie Hughes but is said to be schooling well at home.

Victory in a race before Cheltenham would almost certainly see Minsk shorten from his current quote of 10/1.
