He may have won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in some style but Ladbrokes News readers actually saw Douvan as the biggest liability out of trainer Willie Mullins’ four hot-pots.

The five-year-old picked up a whopping 69 per cent of the pre-race vote, but certainly proved the doubters wrong, with a four-and-a-half lengths victory in the opening contest of the Cheltenham Festival.

Faugheen was second in the poll, with the unbeaten seven-year-old backed by 19 per cent of readers to disappoint.

Once again, however, readers were proven wrong with Ruby Walsh riding to victory yet again in the Champion Hurdle as part of a memorable day for both the jockey and Mullins.

Un De Sceaux and Annie Power were placed joint-third in the vote, though it was the latter of the pair that ended up preventing the Irish trainer from completing a clean sweep of four wins.

Walsh was the hero once again, riding the favourite Un De Sceaux to a comfortable and largely expected victory in the Arkle.

However there was drama in the Mares’ Hurdle, with Annie Power denied what would surely have been a victory after the favourite threw herself at the final hurdle, pitching Walsh out of the saddle in the process.
