Back Channel 4 double for Johnston to swell Kodi Bear war chest

The Celebration Mile is the cherry on top of Saturday’s Channel 4 card, but favourite Kodi Bear is as tough to back as she is to oppose at 4/6.

For all bar the most confirmed favourite backers, the Group 2 contest might be a watching brief, but by then armchair punters should be more than satisfied with their takings if following the advice below.

2:20 Beverley, Bullet Sprint Stakes – Ridge Ranger

Maarek is the class act in this field, but down in grade and denied the give in the ground that has proven an essential companion to his best work, he can be turned over in Yorkshire.

Eric Alston’s Ridge Ranger looks to have the credentials for the job, having won three times from six runs on good going and twice from three tilts at the basement trip during a ten-race career to date.

She’s now won three of her last five starts including the most recent, while her Chester victory over 6f will stand her in good stead over what is a particularly stiff 5f at Beverley.

2:35 Goodwood, 888Sport Stakes – Enlace

Middleham maestro Mark Johnston is far from averse to taking out big handicaps at this idiosyncratic course and can do so again here with the enigmatic Enlace.

The filly couldn’t have a more different profile from unexposed likely favourite Fox Trotter (despite being the same age), having raced 21 times with mixed results.

However, she seems to relish Goodwood’s unique requirements to the extent that she downed Brian Meehan’s filly last time the pair met, her third win in three races at the track.

3:10 Goodwood, March Stakes – Vive Ma Fille NAP

Johnston can bring up a double in lickety-split fashion courtesy of another filly.

A three-and-three-quarter length fifth behind Big Orange in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup on her last run, Vive Ma Fille’s almost preposterously well-treated at the weights.

Age and gender conspire to leave her at least 12lbs better off than even her highest-rated rivals for the return to 1m4f.

Vive Ma Fille has finished second on her last two runs at a-mile-and-a-half, most recently when attempting to concede weight all round at Chester.

The stronger pace at this higher level should play to her obvious staying power.
