Candlelight Fire is the one to beat this evening as the British Breeders’ Stakes Final takes centre-stage at Nottingham.
Elaine Parker’s star is unbeaten in his last four starts and was hugely impressive when coming through the heats and semi-final to reach this evening’s climax.
Traditionally the three-year-old is first out of the traps. If he can get a lightning-fast start again this evening, then he could be difficult to catch at odds of 6/4.
His main contender is 2/1 shot King Kid.
Elizabeth McNair’s runner is in good form but still has it all to do to reverse placings with the favourite after finishing second behind Candlelight Fire in the semi-final. The good news is that he’s won four times at Nottingham in the past year and a half.
If he’s to spring a shock tonight, then he’ll need to steal a march on Parker’s contender from the off.
Then comes Romeo Desperado at 5/1.
Though inexperienced compared to the two leading contenders, Dave Firmager’s fancy was impressive in the third semi-final.
He clocked an identical time to market leader Candlelight Fire and managed to break his Nottingham hoodoo in the process.
A record of only four wins from 15 is a worry, but Romeo Desperado certainly appears to be the value pick from tonight’s runners.
We then have a big jump to Far Bank Frank and Queen Dawn, both of whom come in at 10/1.
The former has only won twice since February and recorded a time over half a second slower than tonight’s leading contenders in his semi-final, while the latter is a progressive type who’s already improved on her heat performance in the semi-finals.
Bringing up the rear at Nottingham should be the totally unfancied Lowgate Malfoy. At 20/1, our traders haven’t given him a prayer.
The son of Windy Millar is without a sub-30 second performance at Nottingham in almost a year. With the quality on show in the Midlands tonight, it’s hard to make a case for the Jim Hayton-trained dog putting up much of a fight over 500m.
