Links golf is about to hit the airwaves once gain for the 143rd British Open and it would be remiss if news.Ladbrokes’ man-with-a-punting-plan, the King of Stats, didn’t offer some key trends to follow at Hoylake.
Hopefully, discerning Ladbrokes customers took the monarch up on his latest July Cup offering where the stats whittled it down to favourite Slade Power, who duly obliged at Newmarket.
3 – Players have held the Claret Jug aloft twice since the turn of the century, Tiger Woods 25/1, Padraig Harrington 125/1 and Ernie Els 80/1.
7 – Other players have a chance to join that list. Defending champion Phil Mickelson 25/1 – could join Harrington and Woods as back-to-back winners since the millennium. Todd Hamilton 1000/1, David Duval 1000/1, Ben Curtis 250/1, Stewart Cink 200/1, Darren Clarke 200s and Louis Oosthuizen 100/1 appear to have less chance.
40 – The last three winners of the Open have all been over 40-years-old, while the average age of champions over the last 10 years is just around 33. This is great news for some of those at the top of the betting including 16/1 shot Justin Rose who is 33, with 34-year-olds Adam Scott 16s, Graeme McDowell 25/1 and Sergio Garcia 25/1 seemingly in the right age bracket.
2 – South Africans, two American and two Irish winners in the last seven years and one Northern Irish; Clarke in ’11. Rory McIroy at 20/1 and McDowell have the chance to square that mini-series.
*Star Stat* 8 – Of the last 10 champions have resided in the top 10 of the leader board after the first 18 holes, including the last five. The average placements during that time suggest fourth is the optimum slot.
1 – Only one of the last six winners has arrived in any form – that was Mickelson who went from winning the Scottish Open to take the Claret Jug at Muirfield. None of the others had finished within the top 10 of their preceding event – while four of the last five posted 50+ placements.
2006 – Was the last time The Open visited Hoylake since 1967 and the winner that day was Tiger Woods. Of the other market leaders, Scott and Garcia both posted top-10 finishes in ’06.
Prediction Shortlist: Scott, Garcia and whoever is fourth after round one.
