In front of a packed press conference, Colin Montgomerie had the European golfing fraternity at his mercy as he announced his wildcard picks for the Ryder Cup in South Wales.

The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport will host the Ryder Cup on the first weekend of October, and Montgomerie’s wildcard picks make the European team look even stronger and they will surely justify their 4/7 favouritism.

After an incredible performance from Edoardo Molinari in Sunday’s Johnnie Walker Championship, his win under immense pressure proved to captain Montgomerie that he was worthy of a Ryder Cup spot and he will join his brother, Francesco, in the European side.

Three-time Major champion Padraig Harrington has made the European side after a poor season, but Montgomerie explained his proven pedigree was capable of providing Europe with the best chance of victory.

Luke Donald completes the European Ryder Cup team after beating off the challenges of Paul Casey and Justin Rose, as Europe look to the magical 14½ points to secure victory over the American team.

Molinari, Harrington and Donald will join Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Francesco Molinari and Miguel Angel Jimenez as Europe attempt to regain the Ryder Cup.

Ryder Cup favourite Sergio Garcia has had a torrid two seasons but his enthusiasm and support for the competition sees him line-up alongside Montgomerie as a vice-captain.

Welshman Rhys Davies will also join the European team at the Ryder Cup in a non-playing position as Montgomerie felt the local lad would increase the atmosphere amongst the Welsh fans.

The American team will have their work cut out regaining the Ryder Cup trophy and are 7/4 to win. Follow the latest Ryder Cup betting market here.
