Padraig Harrington has accelerated close to the forefront of the market for The Barclays, amidst a superb opening round that sees him on -7.

Now Harrington, winner of this competition in 2005, is 9/1 second-favourite to claim success again in Farmingdale.

He has failed to achieve a US Tour title in four years, but this now seems his best chance in some time to do so, after a terrific round of 64.

This included six birdies from seven holes on the back-nine, and that sort of form could see him force his way into Jose Maria Olazabal’s thoughts as a potential Ryder Cup wildcard selection.

Meanwhile, The Barclays leaderboard sees Harrington one stroke ahead of American competitors Nick Watney and Brian Harman, but it is another US native who remains more favourable in the market.

Only Tiger Woods is higher in the betting at 8/1, despite the American currently tying for 14th position after a decent opening round of 68, which sees him three under par.

Woods has never actually won this event, which is even more surprising considering the plethora of American golfers that have, particularly in recent years.

Indeed, four of the last five winners of the competition have been of US origin, and so some may take interest in the two men currently tying for second place.

Watney is a 12/1 shot for the PGA Tour win, whilst Ladbrokes are willing to take on Harman, who remains a lengthy 50/1 chance for glory.

Elsewhere, previous two-time winner of this event Sergio Garcia sits comfortably on five under par, and he is 12/1 to complete a hat-trick of Barclays triumphs.

England’s main hope is Justin Rose, who is afforded the same price as Garcia after finishing his first round four under par.

And Rory McIlroy certainly cannot be discounted as a 10/1 option.

The world number one seemingly came from nowhere to land the PGA Championship earlier this month, and could do so again here from 25th place after a -2 first round.
