The Wells Fargo Championship has been a profitable tournament for American players over the years, with eight of the ten victors coming from the States.

The first man to look at here should be Webb Simpson who is attractively priced at 16/1.

The 27-year-old lives less than a mile from the course and has spent the last week honing his game at Quail Hollow. Despite failing to win since his US Open success last year, he has been consistently impressive of late with seven top-25s and three top-6 finishes in 11 events.

Simpson also has pedigree in this tournament, coming home fourth in 2012 and making the top 25 in 2010 and is in good form having narrowly missed out on the title at Harbour Town two weeks ago, when he was edged out in a play-off by Graeme McDowell.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson seems to have done everything but win here.

Lefty has never missed the cut around here in his nine starts and has worked his way into the top-10 on no fewer than six of those outings, making him a strong candidate at 16/1.

The third American to keep an eye out for could well be Lucas Glover.

The South Carolina swinger has had an inconsistent 2013 but while he has missed the cut in four of his previous eight events he has also recorded a pair of fourth place finishes, including one in his last appearance at the Zurich Classic.

The 50/1 about Glover continuing that form at an event he won in 2011 looks generous, especially for punters searching for an educated each-way punt.

The 8/1 favourite Rory McIlroy missed the cut in 2011 but backers of the Northern Irishman will point to his first ever PGA Tour title that he claimed here in 2010.

The course record holder (62) lost in a play-off last year and is well rested after his underwhelming showing at The Masters.
