Lack of big names clears Bjorn’s path to win Made In Denmark

Although the name of the European Tour’s next event suggests it could actually be a reality TV show, the inaugural Made In Denmark is a bona fide golf tournament with real prize money and a clear and worthy favourite.

Thomas Bjorn’s position as one of the leading golfer’s on the European Tour, which has led to his role as Chairman of the Players’ committee, is one of the overriding reasons top-level golf is making a return to his native land for the first time since 2003.

A winner of 15 events this side of the Atlantic, the last of which came right at the outset of the current season at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, Bjorn has more than enough credentials to be considered the 12/1 favourite.

The man affectionately known as the Great Dane sits third in prize-money earned in the Race To Dubai standings and is the stand-out candidate despite a missed cut at the PGA Championship.

Other players in with a decent crack at triumphing on 7,033-yard par 71 course at Himmerland Golf and Spar Resort include another Dane and a good sprinkling of Englishman in the absence of most of the Tour’s top names.

Highly-promising Dane Thorbjorn Olesen (20/1) will enjoy plenty of home support and comes off an impressive T30 at the PGA Championship.

The 24-year-old may have endured a few missed cuts on the US Tour after splitting his time between both tours this season, but there were definite signs at Valhalla that the form which saw him score successive top fives on the European Tour early in the season may be returning.

Six-time Tour winner Simon Dyson, also at 20s, is probably the pick of the English contingent to shoot low in Denmark heading into his 21st European Tour event of the season.

The York native didn’t quite build on his fifth-place finish at the BMW International in his last two starts, but ended strongly on his last appearance to tie for 35th at the Scottish Open a month ago and will be refreshed after taking a break since.
