The British Grand Prix has not been the most fruitful of races for Caterham over the last few years and 6/1 looks like cracking value for the Oxfordshire constructor to retire first.

And there would have been no nervous moments if you were on this bet last year. Vitaly Petrov’s car suffered from engine failure on his way round to the grid and had to return to the pits, with the car being retired before the race had even begun.

Unfortunately, this season, and the last three races in particular, have been blemished by similar problems.

The penultimate race at Monaco saw Charles Pic retire after only seven laps, becoming the first casualty of the race. The Frenchman had made a good start and was running in 15th before a gearbox fire meant he had to retire. He is 14/1 to be the first man off the track this time.

His team-mate Giedo van der Garde, who is 11/1 to retire first, has also struggled this year, failing to complete two of the last three races.

In the last race in Canada, the Dutchman first collided with Mark Webber, who slammed him as a “pay driver with no mirrors” after. If his peer’s opinions are anything to go by, then van der Garde could be a good bet to cause another collision this time.

He then suffered his final crash of the race with Nico Hulkenberg on lap 43 as the Sauber driver tried to lap him. Van der Garde had to retire before anyone else and was ruled too slow to respond to the blue flags meaning he faces a five-place grid penalty at Silverstone.

Hulkenberg, who is 20/1 to be the first driver to exit, retired two laps later but Sauber’s problems did not end there. Their other driver Esteban Gutierrez, 14/1, came off the track and crashed on lap 63 and it does not bode well for the Swiss team who have had a retirement in the British Grand Prix for the last three seasons. They are 8/1 to be the first constructor to retire this time.
