British title hope Lewis Hamilton will give his championship chances a significant boost by taking the chequered flag at the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time on May 9th.

The Mercedes ace has struggled at the Circuit de Catalunya in the past, failing to reach the podium on four of his seven outings in Barcelona.

However, the 2008 World Champion looks set to end his dismal run with success this time round, a feat priced at 8/13 with Ladbrokes.

Fernando Alonso was last year’s winner and with a partisan crowd cheering him on the 14/1 on a repeat success tempts both as an outright and an each-way option.

However, the Spanish Grand Prix is one of those races that no driver has been able to stamp their authority on in recent years with a different winner coming in each of the last nine seasons.

Not since Michael Schumacher won four back-to-back races between 2001 and 2004 has the Spanish crown been successfully defended and Hamilton looks poised to continue this trend after winning the last three races of the current campaign.

That hat-trick of wins came after a retirement in Australia and Hamilton’s misfortune Down Under means that his team mate and rival Nico Rosberg currently occupies top spot in the drivers’ standings.

The German has been allowed to race his team mate thus far – with Mercedes eschewing the growing trend for team tactics – and should this continue Rosberg is really the only other alternative to Hamilton at 9/4.

Sebastian Vettel’s pricing as 16/1 underdog to take this race highlights the problems the reigning champion has been having this year.

However, the German ace showed with a third-place finish in Malaysia that he remains competitive, so again an each way shout on the Red Bull driver could prove a shrewd bet.
