A battling performance when gaining second in Austria from ninth on the grid proved a decent bit of damage limitation for Lewis Hamilton in the end, but with Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg taking victory, only a win will do for the Brit at Silverstone.

The gap Hamilton has to bridge to the German is now a sizeable 29 points, making Rosberg the 8/13 favourite to pip the Brit to the drivers’ world championship, with the former now a 6/5 shot to land a second title.

However, if Hamilton is to collect a much-needed chequered flag to halt Rosberg’s charge and swing the championship pendulum back his way, he won’t have many better opportunities than at Silverstone.

Already a winner at the Northamptonshire circuit during his run to glory in 2008 for McLaren, Silverstone is a track the Stevenage native knows very well.

And although he’s shown some shaky form there in recent years, he poled in 2013 and has recorded three podiums and two fourths in seven appearances on home turf.

The former McLaren man is the 4/6 market leader to win the 2014 edition with Rosberg 6/4 to repeat his 2013 success.

Hamilton himself clearly feels like his home Grand Prix has arrived at a convenient moment during this inter-Mercedes tussle for the F1 drivers’ crown.

“It’s coming at the right time. I have had a couple of dodgy races, so it will be good to get it right. I’m going to Silverstone with the best package I’ve ever had,” said Hamilton.

It won’t be lost on Nicole Sherzinger’s other half that he also has a top opportunity to join three other distinguished Brits as a double winner of the British Grand Prix

Perhaps it’s pushing it a little far to call David Coulthard ‘a great’ of British motor racing history (though he did finish as title runner-up in 2001) but Sterling Moss and Jackie Stewart certainly fit the bill.

History and a way back into the title race await the Silver Arrows man at Silverstone, he just needs to do the business now.
