Punters backing Germany to advance to the semi-finals of the World Cup could be tempted to switch their allegiances to France following a flu bout in Die Mannschaft’s camp.

Joachim Loew has revealed that seven members of his squad – including influential goal-getter Thomas Mueller – have been struck by a flu-like bug, leaving them feeling under the weather and suffering from sore throats.

Loew has put a brave face on the situation, saying he is hopeful it will not affect his side’s chances, but the news makes the 10/11 on France to qualify by any means a tempting option.

With the Golden Boot at stake Mueller is likely to play regardless of his condition but if Loew deems him a risk the situation could play into the hands of team-mate Miroslav Klose.

The Lazio striker drew level with Brazil legend Ronaldo as the joint all-time highest scorer at the World Cup finals after levelling against Ghana and knows a single strike will see him hold the record in his own right.

Ladbrokes aren’t usually the sentimental types but with a potential history-making moment in the offing, the bookmaker is offering a special price of 4/1 on Klose to score and Germany to qualify for the semi-final.

However, while Klose clearly has an eye for goal, it is worth noting that the last three games at this tournament have all ended 0-0 at 90 minutes.

Of course it is only natural for teams to be more cautious as the tournament goes on and with France v Germany billed as The Battle of the Sweeper Keepers it could pay to take the 7/1 about a 0-0 score line at the end of 90 minutes here.

Finally, in keeping with the lack of goals theme, the 10/11 on there being less than five goals scored in tonight’s fixtures looks like a licence to print money!
