According to a reputable newspaper based in the city, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is still intent on bringing Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana to the club once his World Cup duties are complete.

After England slumped to successive defeats in Group D that moment is likely to come along pretty soon for Lallana, who has twice been brought on as a second-half sub by Roy Hodgson.

England’s threadbare hopes of extending their stay in Brazil are now rated at 6/1, but they must rely on Italy winning both their other games and still having to defeat Costa Rica by a few.

While Lallana will likely lament not getting more game time in the Three Lions’ first two defeats, sealing his dream move to Liverpool could help soften the disappointment after the World Cup.

But so far his club have not been able to agree a fee with Liverpool, who have twice had bids of £20m then £25m turned down by Southampton.

It’s reported that Saints are demanding £30m for Lallana’s services as they understandably play hardball in their attempts to prevent the disintegration of a talented squad.

However, while the Reds are reluctant to stump up the sum, Rodgers still wishes to parley with the south coast outfit again once England’s ‘adventure’ in Brazil reaches its conclusion.

Rodgers is aware that Anfield is Lallana’s preferred destination and he’s certainly a player who could seamlessly slot into the 4-2-3-1 system the Northern Irishman likes to employ in any of the trio of advanced positions behind a main striker.

If an agreement still can’t be reached over the proposed transfer, the Reds will not be stuck for alternatives.

Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri and Benfica’s Lazar Markovic are two names which have been consistently linked.
