It’s fair to say it’s been a pretty eventful few weeks across this side of the Irish Sea. Since my last League of Ireland betting piece, all Irish teams have been knocked out of from European competitions, Cork City’s top goal scorer has departed to England and the league leaders’ unbeaten run has been dashed.
Oh, and Bray Wanderers’ chairman (in a bizarre rant) compared the club’s location and situation with North Korea.
So, it’s been a standard few weeks in the league by all accounts!
But let’s get down to business. For this week’s banker, you need look no further than the league leaders’ trip to rock bottom Drogheda United. As mentioned above, Cork’s unbeaten run came to an end last week against Bohemians.
While there a number of excuses, including the significant loss of Sean Maguire to Preston, you would expect pride to be restored for the champions in-waiting this week.
The 1/5 price reflects that this should be a routine win for Cork and seeing as Drogheda are now the one team being cut adrift at the bottom of the division, that is no big surprise.
For a bit of value, go with Cork to win both halves.
Another huge game in the relegation dog-fight is Finn Harps vs Galway United, who strangely enough are two of the league’s in-form sides.
Galway have only lost to the top two, Cork and Dundalk, in their last five games.
While Harps have won three games on the bounce. Both Teams to Score and a draw at 10/3 is a really good price.
It’s hard to fancy Galway for this game though. The late departure of Lee Grace to Shamrock Rovers and a vomiting bug in the camp has left them looking frail.
A win for Harps will put seven points between themselves and the relegation threatened Tribesmen and they should be chomping at the bit to take advantage for a home victory.
Finn Harps to win and strike a huge blow for staying in the division is the selection.
The game of the weekend sees Shamrock Rovers duking it out with Derry City for the remaining Europa league qualification spot.
This is likely to be a topsy-turvy affair so it’s worth noting the HT/FT results for Derry/Shamrock Rovers and Shamrock Rovers/Derry both pay 33/1. I wouldn’t put you off either.
Both teams are guilty of letting some very winnable games slip, but Rovers are probably a bit more so.
They looked a bit laboured and vulnerable in their defeat in the Dublin Derby last week.
Meanwhile, Derry have begun to repair the damage of their initiation in Europe with four wins and four clean sheets in their last five games. Having beaten Rovers twice already this season, Derry to win is available at a very backable price.
Treble: Cork to win both halves against Drogheda, Finn Harps to beat Galway & Derry City to beat Shamrock Rovers @ 13/1.
