It wasn’t long ago that Salford City and Leyton Orient were separated by five divisions in the hierarchy of English football.

This afternoon they meet as equals, as the new National League season gets underway with a mouth-watering clash between two of the promotion favourites.

Match odds

Despite their status at divisional newbies, cash-rich Salford are even-money to kick-off their first season in the top-tier of non-league football with a win.

Orient will be well-drilled under Justin Edinburgh and have made a couple of shrewd signings in the transfer window. You can back them at 5/2.

There were five draws on the opening weekend last season. It’s 23/10 for this one to end in a stalemate.

Goalscorer odds

All the talk in the close season has been about the Ammies’ capture of Adam Rooney. The 30-year-old bagged seven goals in the Ladbrokes Premiership last season and is 10/3 to Score Anytime.

Fellow new recruit Rory Gaffney is available at 7/4 Anytime.

The O’s, on the other hand, will be looking towards the dangerous Macauley Bonne to add to last season’s tally of 22 goals in all competitions. He’s 7/4 Anytime or 5/1 to Score First.

James Alabi lit up the league with Chester the year before last but failed to fire with Tranmere Rovers last season. He’s 9/4 to return to get back amongst the goals here.

Correct Score odds

Both teams have players who are more than capable of finding the back of the net. So goals should be forthcoming in this season opener. It’s 11/2 to end 1-1 between two evenly matched sides.

If you’re looking to back a winner, it’s the hosts who have the more dangerous attacking line-up.

Couple that with an O’s defence which likes to bomb forward on the flanks and is static in the middle, and it’s 15/2 for Salford to win 2-1.
