Tottenham Hotspur’s campaign to make their presence felt in the USA looks set to hit new heights, with the purchase of DeAndre Yedlin imminent according to rumour mills on both sides of the Atlantic.

The right-back made quite the impression for the USA at the World Cup despite being used exclusively as a substitute, with his ludicrous pace terrorising Belgium during their epic last-16 clash.

Yedlin will be the third defensive recruit of Spurs’ window, suggesting Mauricio Pochettino has identified the back four as the main problem area of their overloaded squad.

If the Argentine can sort out the backline and thus avoid a few of the thrashings Spurs received last term, their 7/2 odds to sneak into the top four might start to look a fine bet.

With his flamboyant haircut and excessive speed, Yedlin also caught the eye when Spurs played Seattle Sounders during pre-season, but there are still questions over his ability to step up to Premier League standards.

Just 21, Yedlin’s defensive nous does not yet match his physical qualities, but in a way that would make him the perfect back up for Kyle Walker, while the American could also play further forward.

He is unlikely to swap Seattle for north London until later in the season however, and could simply sign a pre-contract agreement to join Spurs in the winter window after seeing out the MLS campaign.

That said, Kyle Naughton looks set to start the year as Spurs’ first choice right-back due to injuries to Walker, and the latter’s niggles might prompt the Lilywhites to bring Yedlin to London immediately.

Naughton has done well in pre-season fixtures under Pochettino, but that might not be enough to save his Spurs career after years of underwhelming displays. Swansea are one possible destination for the 25-year-old.
