Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has said he doesn’t expect any further incomings or outgoings at Old Trafford during this transfer window. But this is a man who is the master of mind games, and with links to Southampton defender Jose Fonte failing to go away, there’s a new name on fans’ lips around St Mary’s.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has been told that there is no future for him at the club – much to the surprise of many, given the Reds’ defensive frailties – and should a Man United move for Jose Fonte materialise, that would open the door for the former PSG man to move to the south coast outfit.

Several incidents involving Sakho have meant that the French international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield and while he reportedly wants to stay and fight for his place at the club, it seems unlikely that Jurgen Klopp will turn to him any time soon.

Having played in England for three full seasons, he certainly boasts enough Premier League experience and would slot straight in to a Fonte-less Saints side.

At 16/1, it’s certainly worth watching how this one develops over the next few hours.

It’s been a quiet day so far down at St Mary’s, but Saints fans will be hoping they see at least one new face arrive before the 11pm deadline tonight, and the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho would certainly give supporters reason to be cheerful.
