Who is… Watford’s new midfield signing Mario Suarez?

It’s a jolly good time to be a Watford fan, with the Hornets sitting pretty in the top-half of the Premier League and producing some fine football under Quique Sanchez Flores.

But for unfortunate late defeats at home to Tottenham and Manchester City, Watford might be higher than their current impressive ninth-place in the table, but it already looks like they can plan ahead for another spell in the top tier next term.

That’s certainly the case if their transfer activity is anything to go by, with the Hertfordshire club’s imminent move to bring Fiorentina’s midfielder Mario Suarez to Vicarage Road.

Spanish international Suarez only moved to Florence from Atletico Madrid in the summer, but a failure to break into the first-team with the Serie A side has left the 28-year-old defensive midfielder seeking alternative employers.

Suarez has made just eight appearances, and only four times has his name been on Paulo Sousa’s starting line-up.

The midfielder began his career at Atletico, but quickly moved on to Vallodolid and Celta Vigo, before a two-year stint with Mallorca.

A fine campaign in 2009-2010 saw him return to the Vicente Calderon, and his second spell at Atletico was hugely successful.

Suarez will be bringing a winning mentality to Hertfordshire, after helping Atletico secure a famous La Liga title under Diego Simeone’ in 2014.

The Spaniard was a Champions League runner-up in the same season, and boasts Europa League, Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup titles to a massively impressive C.V.

Watford are rapidly becoming one of the Premier League’s most accomplished outfits, and the addition of Suarez is only a further string to the Hornets’ bow.
