Who is…the ‘next Ibrahimovic’ that Liverpool are trying to lure

It seems not a day goes by without the discovery of the next ‘somebody’ in football and on this occasion it’s a young Swede making headlines having been compared to, you guessed it, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However unlike the vast majority of spurious comparisons concerning wave-making youngsters, this one at least has some credible origins.

The 17-year-old striker in question, Alexander Isak, who has scored six goals in Sweden’s Allsvenskan in 18 appearances this season has been talked up by his AIK teammate.

Fellow forward Chinedu Obasi told Swedish outlet FotbollSkanalen: “He (Isak) has great potential, and I absolutely believe that he will go far.

“If he concentrates and continues as he is, I think he can become Sweden’s next Ibrahimovic. He has the potential, everyone can see it.”

Given the inventory of medals and personal accolades the Manchester United man has amassed in stints across nearly every one of the continent’s top leagues, this endorsement may sound a little trite.

However the interest of several top European clubs, apparently headed up most keenly by Liverpool, suggests Obasi may be on to something.

According to the Liverpool Echo the Reds have been closely monitoring AIK’s burgeoning talent, though Leicester, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona also have their noses to the ground.

Looking for exact traits that link the two players who are a lifetime apart in age are quite difficult other than the way they have burst onto the scene in Sweden having been born to immigrant parents.

Isak is of Eritrean descent and having only turned 17 on September 21st there is still a chance the 6 ft 3” teenager will grow another couple of inches to match Ibrahimovic’s height.

The younger man is certainly not lacking in confidence and given the hype he doesn’t seem likely to stay in Swedish football for a great deal of time longer.
