They may have begun their new season with a win, but unease continues to surround West Brom as they look to land the striker which would allow Saido Berahino to finally leave.

The Baggies’ beat Crystal Palace 1-0 on the opening weekend, but Tony Pulis is still struggling to bring in a new striker to support Saturday’s match-winner Solomon Rondom.

Both Palace and Stoke remain in the hunt for Berahino, but no move will be allowed to take place until West Brom find their own man first.

And their latest target is Sporting Lisbon’s Islam Slimani.

A host of Premier League clubs – including Arsenal and Everton – have been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, and it’s little wonder why given his form.

Slimani fired in 27 goals from 33 Primeira Liga appearances last season, but it’s those stats which are drumming up a price tag which Pulis and West Brom are struggling to match.

The latest reports state the Black Country side have offered a club-record smashing £21m for the Algerian, but that figure is still some £5m short of what Sporting will sell for.

Shelling out over £25m then would be a mightily significant decision for the club, who have only twice paid over £7m for a player in their history.

And with just two weeks left until the summer transfer window slams shut, West Brom are running out of time to make a move stick.

Another season with the wantaway Berahino is unlikely to be terribly productive, so it remains to be seen how Pulis plays his next move.

The manager has made it very clear that the Englishman will only depart if another striker comes in first.

Matt Phillips from QPR is West Brom’s only signing of the summer thus far, but don’t be surprised to see the Baggies become one of the busier clubs as the deadline looms.
