Aston Villa will need to find goals from a new source other than Gabby Agbonlahor if they are to continue their strong recent record against local neighbours Birmingham.
Villa have managed just nine goals in as many games in the Premier League this season and these struggles have been largely as a result of Agbonlahor being out injured.
The England striker has also scored three goals in his last four games against Birmingham and even more endearing to Villa fans is that on two of these occasions these have proved to be the winner.
John Carew has recovered from flu, but it is Emile Heskey that is likely to lead the line after his resurgence in form under new boss Gerard Houllier.
Heskey is 6/1 to open the scoring against Birmingham, while Stewart Downing has three league goals for Villa this season and on each of these occasions it has been the first of the game.
Downing is 10/1 to break the deadlock.
Nikola Zigic is looking to play in his first midlands derby against Aston Villa and is 8/1 to make an immediate impact with the opening goal.
Birmingham avoided defeat in their first six Premier League games with Villa, but they have lost the six that have taken place since.
Villa are 5/6 to extend this run to seven games and they are still unbeaten at home in the league this season, with their big troubles coming away on the road.
On a positive note for Birmingham is that Villa have gone almost three whole Premier League games without a goal and have managed to find the net just twice in the second half of games this season.
Meanwhile, Birmingham may not be prolific in front of goal themselves, but have scored in five of their six Premier League visits to Villa Park.
Alex McLeish’s men are 7/2 to take the three points and claim a first away win in the top flight this season. See the full Aston Villa vs Birmingham match betting odds market.
