Villa looking to snatch Leicester’s player of the season

Hot on the heels of the shocking news their manager has been fired, Leicester fans could be sent reeling all over again if rivals Aston Villa manage to persuade the Foxes best player to jump ship as well.

Nigel Pearson’s sudden exit has generated a sense of disbelief (link to your story) among the Foxes faithful and to compound matters, Esteban Cambiasso is now a target of Villa ahead of the 2015/16 season.

As the man who managed to attract the seasoned Argentine star to the newly-promoted Premier League outfit last summer, Pearson’s axing could yet prove an undesirable influence on Cambiasso’s next move.

Having signed shortly after his 34th birthday, it was understandable that Leicester only offered a year’s contract to the Inter Milan legend, a deal which has now expired.

With the benefit of hindsight the decision now looks a flawed one, as Cambiasso’s class shone through over a rollercoaster campaign in which the 52-cap Argentina midfielder went on to earn Leicester’s Player-of-the-Season award.

His calming influence and winning mentality are attributes Villa boss Tim Sherwood has cited as very attractive according to the Sun newspaper, who say the club plan to swoop.

Leicester had been hoping all the adulation heaped upon Cambiasso for his role in the ‘great escape’, would be a powerful enough motive for the player to sign for another campaign.

Villa’s interest may well turn the Buenos Aires native’s head, though, and much could depend on the financial incentives either club are prepared to offer.

After a glittering career at the top level, Cambiasso probably didn’t envisage a tour of the Midlands as his career swansong, but that could be what ensues for the hugely respected Argentine, much to Leicester’s dismay.

As it stands, the Foxes are still above the Villans in the betting to be the top-placed Midlands club next season at 10/3 and 7/2 respectively.
