Steve McClaren is keeping his options open when it comes to finding a new striker at Newcastle. Charlie Austin is believed to be the number one target for the former Middlesbrough boss, but there are a growing list of alternatives being drawn up at St James’ Park.
Wolfsburg’s Bas Dost and Anderlecht man Aleksandar Mitrovic are two such options should a deal for the QPR favourite fail to materialise and now Bordeaux’s young livewire Diego Rolan has joined the shortlist.
It’s believed the Magpies have lodged an enquiry into the forward’s availability, with £15m the fee most likely to land the 22-year-old.
Rolan, who scored 17 goals in 61 appearances during his time with the French club, has recently been turning out for Uruguay in the Copa America.
The Montevideo native joined Bordeaux from Defensor Sporting in 2013 but suffered a frustrating first campaign at the Les Girondins scoring just twice in 18 league appearances.
A far better return this past season has made up for the slow start, however, with Rolan netting 15 times in Ligue 1 and adding four assists during a term in which Bordeaux finished sixth.
With Austin in high demand across the Premier League, McClaren has been forced to make contingency plans in the event that the England striker moves elsewhere.
Ahead of a debut campaign in charge of the north east club, McClaren knows a reliable source of goals is vital if he is to make a success of his tenure.
Ladbrokes make Newcastle 5/2 shots to finish in the top 10 this coming season and with top scorer Papiss Cisse regularly rumoured to be on the way out of the club, recruitment in the sharp end of pitch is a must this summer.
