Many strikers have been linked with a January move to 4/1 Premier League title hopefuls Arsenal, but it could be a player who looked far more likely to join rivals Tottenham that provides the most viable solution.
Mirko Vucinic was Juventus’ first-choice forward in both of their recent Serie A-winning campaigns, only to be relegated down the pecking order by the summer purchases of Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente.
The Old Lady’s transfer guru Giuseppe Marotta has already clarified that no player will be forced to stay in Turin against their will this winter and the expectation is that the stylish 30-year-old will relocate, potentially on a short-term basis.
Tottenham are considered the leading English suitors, yet new boss Tim Sherwood has stated that the last thing that his 9/2 top-four candidates need are fresh signings after an extensive pre-season squad overhaul.
That attitude, in addition to his assertion that the most recent influx of arrivals deserve to be given longer to settle, is a key reason why Sherwood was afforded a chance over a high-profile manager demanding further reinforcements to take the job.
Arsenal have also tracked the Montenegrin since his Roma days and, though his hold-up play isn’t as impressive as Olivier Giroud’s, his vision and technique make him a good match for Arsenal, and he will be cheaper than many alternatives.
Despite Lukas Podolski’s scoring return at West Ham, the Gunners are still thought to be shopping around for Giroud cover, as the German international is more commonly utilised in a wide role.
Nicklas Bendtner is the current understudy, but despite scoring in his sole Premier League start against Hull to hint that he was the solution, the maligned Dane was gifted just 19 minutes in five games since, indicating a lack of faith from Arsene Wenger.
Giroud will almost certainly get the nod again at Newcastle in Arsenal’s final match of 2013 and is 4/1 to respond with the opening goal.
