Like a blind man relies on his guide dog and cane, Tottenham have grown accustomed to one player endlessly rescuing them from the doldrums in recent seasons.
Following in Gareth Bale’s footsteps, but not quite filling them with the same spectacular results, Emmanuel Adebayor has been the player to most often give Spurs fans hope of glory this term.
It’s no longer just the Tottenham faithful who can benefit from the one-man Togo show, with Ladbrokes customers who want to back the beanpole striker to score first against Sunderland now able to do so at a boosted price of 9/2.
The former Arsenal man is the White Hart Lane club’s leading scorer this season with 11 goals. Eight of those have come in the Premier League which only goes to show how lean a season it has been in front of goal for the north London side in 2013/14.
Of those eight strikes, four have broken the game’s deadlock, while Spurs as a club have maintained that 50 per cent strike rate in scoring the first of the match – doing so 16 times in their 32 outings so far.
They look good value to nab the first against Sunderland, who have allowed their opponents to take the lead in 16 of their 30 matches in the top flight this season.
Should Spurs do so they will almost certainly go on to record a victory considering the Black Cats haven’t come back to win any of the games in which they’ve shipped first.
For Adebayor, it’s high time he ends a nine-game wait for his first goal against the north-east club, while only one goal in front of the Lilywhites faithful in the Premier League this campaign is another area that he’ll surely fancy improving upon against Gus Poyet’s strugglers.
