Tottenham winger needs to get away to ensure England future

Andros Townsend’s proposed move to Newcastle United is apparently no longer on the cards, with Sky Sports reporting that the Magpies are put off by Tottenham Hotspurs’ valuation of the winger.

The north Londoners are said to be asking for £14m for Townsend, but Newcastle aren’t looking to spend more than £10.5m on the transfer.

Both sides’ unwillingness to budge will see the 24-year-old miss out on a move that would have huge implications for his international career.

Currently, the deal is priced at 2/5 to go through and Townsend will be hoping that those odds come in.

The Toons’ transfer target last played for England in a European Championship qualifying game against Lithuania in October.

On that occasion, he was on the pitch for 17 minutes as a second-half substitute for Ross Barkley, but failed to make the squad for the November friendly matches with Spain and France.

Roy Hodgson’s decision to omit the Tottenham man is undoubtedly due to the latter’s lack of playing time this season.

Townsend has only managed seven appearances across all competitions this campaign and has only played twice since he last represented the Three Lions.

Hodgson is clearly fond of the Londoner, with the former West Brom manager handing ten caps to the player and only injury stopped him calling the 24-year-old up for the 2014 World Cup.

However, the England manager cannot give games to players who aren’t featuring for their club and Spurs are forcing his hand in this regard.

Therefore, in order to have a realistic chance of making the plane for Euro 2016, Townsend needs to move away from White Hart Lane.

A run of games would put him right back in contention to make Hodgson’s squad due to the England boss’ penchant for picking the midfielder.

If Spurs and Newcastle aren’t able to agree on a price, then a loan move should be looked into, as this would allow the England international the chance to impress in the run up to the tournament in France.
