Much is being made of Tottenham’s relatively quiet transfer business this summer, but with time running out before the window closes, it seems boss Mauricio Pochettino has at least one more target in mind.
Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen are the only two arrivals at White Hart Lane, but reports across the weekend are linking the club with Dynamo Kiev’s star man Andriy Yarmolenko.
It’s believed Spurs could land the 26-year-old for around £18m, and his record suggests the Ukrainian international would bring plenty of attacking quality to north London.
Yarmolenko has scored 95 times from 224 appearances in the Ukrainian top tier, in addition to 64 assists which would suit Pochettino’s team-based ethos rather nicely.
From 23 appearances last season, the Ukraine ace netted 13 times while supplying 10 assists.
The winger has been linked with a Premier League deal frequently over the past couple of seasons but a move may now be on the cards after reports of a falling out between player and club.
Kiev agreed a new deal with their prize asset just last summer, but it’s believed that was only to ensure the club received a sizeable fee when Yarmolenko moved on.
That time appears to have come, although reports emerging from Ukraine suggest the club may have reneged on that agreement.
Yarmolenko is also believed to have refused to play earlier this season in protest at Kiev’s change of heart.
With the transfer window closing in less than a fortnight, Kiev will be under increasing pressure to sell.
Certainly from a Spurs perspective, the rumoured discord can only be a good thing.
Pochettino’s men have enjoyed a steady start to the new Premier League season, but their first proper test awaits this weekend.
Spurs welcome Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to the Lane in Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off, and we’re 13/10 the hosts bag another three points.
