Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is very selective about the players he wants at White Hart Lane, so it must say a lot about Fiorentina’s Federico Bernardeschi.
The 22-year-old winger has been linked with a move to the white half of north London following a stunning campaign in Florence.
Bernardeschi – who netted against Spurs when the two sides met in last season’s Europa League – has bagged nine goals and two assists in 18 games for La Violas this season.
Producing over a third of Fiorentina’s strikes this term, the Italian international has also drawn the attention of Bayern Munich and PSG.
Spurs have been lacking quality on the flanks this season, due to the absence of Erik Lamela.
The Argentinean ace has featured just nine times due to injury.
And with Bernardeschi valued at just over £20m by the number whizzes at transfermarkt.co.uk, and with a contract running until 2019, he won’t come cheap.
Especially if Fiorentina manage to negotiate a reported £85m release clause into a new contract, as has been reported.
But the Florence outfit sit only ninth in Serie A, and any hopes of landing Champions League football next season look slim.
That’s where Tottenham will be hoping to take the advantage, with the White Hart Lane outfit in fine form right now.
With five wins on the spin – including a superb victory over leaders Chelsea – Spurs sit third in the table.
And with Pochettino clearly building a youthful squad for the future – one with a brand new stadium – Bernardeschi could be an ideal signing.
The winger is well on course to hit double-figures in Serie A this season, and at 22, is sure to get better still in the years to come.
