Diego Costa’s 10 goals in eight starts and the impressiveness of the performances of the latest Spanish midfield sensation Koke may have stolen the headlines, as Atletico Madrid have made a 100 per cent-winning start to the La Liga season.
But the contribution of midfielder Raul Garcia should not be underestimated, as he is the club’s second highest league scorer this season, despite starting only three fixtures.
What is also interesting is that it is Xabi Alonso and Victor Valdes that are the most talked about probable La Liga free agents next summer, with Valdes looking most likely to head to Monaco and Alonso being linked with a switch to the MLS.
However, the number of players out of contract in La Liga at the end of the season almost reaches three figures and so there are numerous players that should be being monitored.
Among the most sought after must be Garcia, even if the early signs are that he is happy to remain at the Vicente Calderon.
Athletic Bilbao are another club that are said to be keeping tabs on Garcia’s contract developments, while Fulham are sure to be up with the front-runners from a Premier League perspective.
Talks can start with the 27-year-old in January and he will be an asset to any club looking for a more physical and aerially-dominating presence in their midfield.
Somewhat strangely for a Spanish midfielder, Garcia’s distribution is not the best, either in terms of accuracy or adventure and he can be prone to conceding possession cheaply.
However, he is a keen tackler with an eye for goal and this would help Fulham, with Stoke the only club to have netted fewer Premier League goals this season.
This needs to improve and Fulham currently look a slightly generous price at 7/2 to be relegated this season, which would definitely rule them out of any future deal for Garcia.
