The Antoine Griezmann saga took another twist today. Two twists in fact.
First was the news that Atletico Madrid will not be able to register any new player they sign this summer until next January.
Secondly, the story that Manchester United are no longer interested in Atletico’s star man.
This may well turn out to be some PR/Marketing spin by the boardroom at Old Trafford – they’re still odds-on to sign him – but let’s take it as true for now.
If they don’t want Griezmann, who should they turn to?
It’s believed United are now seeking a number nine, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic set to miss the early months of next term through injury.
Even when the Swede does return, he’ll be 36-years-old.
So Jose Mourinho needs a top-level goalscorer for the coming seasons.
These three men fit the bill…
The French international is almost certain to leave Lyon this summer, and had been poised to join Atletico Madrid.
But the La Liga outfit’s ban now throws his future up in the air.
Lacazette has been due a move to a European giant for some time, and now could be Man United’s best chance to swoop in.
The Torino hotshot has been in scintillating form in Serie A, bagging a whopping 26 goals from just 35 games for the Turin-based side.
His club have slapped a sizeable £85m release clause on their star man, but Belotti is still only 23-years-old, and his physicality should ensure he won’t be overawed by the Premier League.
Another hotshot 23-year-old. Romelu Lukaku enjoyed his best season yet for Everton last time out, notching 25 goals.
Chelsea have been favourites to bring the Belgian back to Stamford Bridge, but much of that move could depend on whether or not Diego Costa moves to China.
If the Spaniard stays put, then it opens the door for United to move in, especially now they can offer the Champions League football Lukaku craves.
