January is right around the corner, and that means the mid-season window bursts open.
But for a number of Premier League sides, some savvy networking and communicating can land a free signing at any time of year.
We’ve done a little spot of research, producing five free agents we think should be taking calls and emails on a regular basis from a plethora of Prem gaffers looking for a cheap mid-season boost.
Here’s our fantastic freebie fivesome…
Released by Juventus in the summer, Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres boasts incredible experience for a freebie – and he’s still only 29.
With 68 caps to his name, Caceres has also turned out for Barcelona and Sevilla.
Has suffered with an achilles tendon injury this year, but if he can regain fitness could prove an incredible mid-season signing.
There are a few sides in the Premier League whose fans may wish they had a bit more steel and determination about them.
Step forward Lorik Cana.
The Albanian legend was released by Nantes in the summer, but at 33 can still do a job.
His passion was clear as he led his side out at their first major tournament in France this summer, while his dismissal in his country’s opening game showcased his robust style.
With 130 yellow cards and five reds to his name, Cana could bring a bit of fight to a relegation-threatened side.
A risky move, but the potential rewards Charles N’Zogbia offers can be great.
The temperamental winger has bags of Premier League pedigree from spells at Newcastle, Wigan and Aston Villa.
The two-time France international is still only 30, and if he can be given the right support, could simply flourish in a new environment.
For N’Zogbia’s pros and cons, Adebayor’s read rather similarly.
The ex-Arsenal man is no stranger to life in the Premier League, and when in the mood, can still be devilishly tough to defend against.
A gamble – literally so given his wage demands – but at 32 a desperate Premier League boss may just see him as a potential saviour.
Once one of Europe’s most sought-after wingers – who scored 42 goals in just two Eredivisie seasons – Jefferson Farfan is a free agent right now.
At 32, the Peruvian should still be able to produce the goods, and according to transfermarkt.co.uk, he’s the most valuable free agent an empty bank account can buy.
