Crystal Palace are not only certainties to be relegated this season, but are doomed to end the campaign at the foot of the standings as far as the Premier League betting is concerned.
Four points from their opening 11 games is hardly an ideal start for Palace and the result is that they are now 1/16 to be the first Championship play-off winners for three seasons to suffer an immediate return to the second tier.
They currently prop up the Premier League table and are three points adrift of 19th-placed Sunderland, despite arresting a seven-game losing streak when securing a 0-0 draw with high-flying Everton.
This positive result has down little to alter Crystal Palace’s price to finish bottom though, which is 4/11 at present.
Sunderland are the only other team that are a single-figure price in this market at 13/2 and the big question has to be whether a case can be made for anyone other than Crystal Palace?
A good starting point has to be that in three of the last seven seasons, the team to be bottom after 11 games has not finished in this position, with Wigan even escaping the drop from this spot in the 2011/12 campaign, despite having only five points at this stage.
Meanwhile, the fixture list has not been overly kind to Crystal Palace yet, with over half of their fixtures thus far against opposition currently sitting in the top seven of the Premier League standings.
The December/January period will be especially critical, as the Eagles host Cardiff, Norwich, West Ham and Stoke in these two months.
In the last two instances when the bottom club after 11 games has avoided finishing 20th, the team to have done so at their expense had averaged exactly one point per fixture at this point.
Norwich are the only club on 11 points this season after as many games and could be worth a small investment at 22/1 to end the season bottom.
