Wales’ sole 2014/15 Premier League representatives Swansea pulled off what looks like one of the summer’s shrewdest signings with the capture of Argentina World Cup centre-half Federico Fernandez from Napoli.
The 25-year-old is the subject of Ladbrokes.com’s latest Breaking Bet, with Fernandez quoted at 14/1 for a goal on debut against Burnley next time out in the Premier League.
This wager may not be as far-fetched as it seems at first glance, as the Buenos Aires man has only struck once since moving to Europe in 2011, but that was in his second outing on loan at La Liga side Getafe in February 2013.
The Swans faithful will be out in force to catch a glimpse of their new South American when top-flight football returns to the Liberty Stadium after the summer break, although coach Garry Monk and chairman Huw Jenkins have reportedly moved onto other matters.
Montpellier holding-midfielder Benjamin Stambouli looks set to become the second man to leave Stade de la Mosson for the Premier League this summer, after winger Remy Cabella’s switched to Newcastle last month.
You won’t find an array of striking stats anywhere with regard to the 24-year-old, who has managed just three senior goals for La Paillade, but Stambouli’s midfield-marshalling skills came in handy when Montpellier took the French top-flight title for the first and thus far only time two years ago.
The former Marseille youth’s expected move to Wales looks likely to hasten the departure of Spanish midfielder Jose Canas, who is set to move away from Swansea despite starting half of their Premier League matches last term, his first at the club.
Monk’s men are 7/10 to follow up their historic opening day win away to Manchester United by beating Burnley, with 4/1 saying Sean Dyche’s side leaves the Liberty with three points and the draw 13/5.
