Sunderland’s Deadline Day could still go one of two ways; David Moyes could wake up tomorrow with a squad he feels can deal with the Premier League, or he could feel like a host of missed opportunities have left the Black Cats in big trouble.

With the future of star defender Lamine Kone still unclear, Moyes is having to play things delicately about signing a potential replacement.

Donald Love and Paddy McNair have arrived from Manchester United, and earlier today a move for Florentin Pogba was touted but quickly dismissed.

Having already sold Younes Kaboul to Watford, Sunderland could be without an established centre-half should Kone go, although 35-year-old John O’Shea remains.

Next on Moyes’ target list is Manchester City’s up-and-coming talent Jason Denayer.

The 21-year-old was tipped to join Galatasaray on a season-long loan, but that move now seems a no-go.

Sunderland now look poised to swoop in for a player with seven caps for Belgium to his name.

Denayer is yet to make a senior appearance for the Citizens, and the arrival of John Stones for £50m from Everton was a very clear indication that Pep Guardiola wasn’t going to hand the Brussels native a chance any time soon.

That should deter Sunderland however, with Denayor earning glowing praises during a loan year at Celtic.

At just 19, Denayer starred at Parkhead, making 44 appearances in all competitions, winning a Scottish Premiership and League Cup double while also landing the club’s young player of the year award.

Denayer won’t have been Sunderland’s number one priority, but he could still prove to be a very shrewd signing if he can continue to unleash his bags of potential and the bookies reckon it could still happen with a move deemed 11/10.
