Earlier this week it had seemed near enough a done deal that Joloen Lescott would depart Aston Villa for a spell in Scotland with Rangers, but now it appears the defender may be staying in England after all.

Sunderland have emerged as contenders for the 34-year-old’s signature, as boss David Moyes looks to team-up once again with the Englishman.

Moyes signed Lescott while in charge of Everton for just £2m in 2006, and he quickly became an integral part as the Toffees regularly finished higher than expected.

After missing just two league games in three seasons, while also breaking into the international squad, Lescott moved to Manchester City in 2009, handing Everton a profit in the region of £20m.

With Sunderland’s star defender Lamine Kone set to leave in the transfer window, Lescott would represent a suitable stop-gap before Moyes properly sorts his squad out next season.

The ex-Man United boss was only handed the Black Cats’ post less than a month ago, and has been busily trying to bring in new faces.

It had seemed earlier this week that Lescott would move to Ladbrokes Premiership returnees Rangers, with a deal deemed odds-on by the bookies.

But Sunderland have emerged as rivals for his signature and represent a very plausible move for the 26-capped international.

Younes Kaboul played alongside Kone in the 2-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday, but with his future with the Wearsiders far from clear either, a move for someone like Lescott may quickly become a must rather than a maybe for Moyes.

The Scotsman has already signed Paddy McNair and Donald Love from Manchester United, but while the two bring plenty of youth and potential, an older head is required if the Black Cats are to survive this season.
