There was a time, before he became the pallbearer of football banter, when Jack Rodwell’s career was going places.
As an Everton player, the defensive midfielder was on such a pleasing trajectory he was afforded the first two of his three international caps, in friendly matches against Spain and Sweden.
Things looked to be getting even better for the 23-year-old as Manchester City – the Premier League holders at the time – came calling for his signature.
With the chance to nail down a place as the anchor to Yaya Toure’s cruise liner in the Citizens midfield, Rodwell was pegged to be at the beginnings of a flourishing career.
However, a hamstring injury ruled him out from October that year until midway through January, by which time his place in the midfield pecking order had slid like an unfortunate counter in snakes and ladders.
Having made just five Premier League appearances last season a move to more acceptable climes was always on the cards this summer and Sunderland have duly offered an escape route by paying 10m for his services.
Upon hearing the news Ladbrokes reacted positively, pricing the Black Cats up at 20/1 to win any major trophy this season.
Having successfully plotted a path to the League Cup final without the midfielder last season, their chances of repeating a memorable cup run can only be enhanced if Rodwell rediscovers the form of his early Everton days.
Sunderland weren’t the only side to get odds on a trophy win priced up though.
News of Louis van Gaal’s pre-season friendly win over Liverpool in the International Champions Cup final saw the bookie go 200/1 that the Dutchman wins the Premier League, FA and League Cup as part of their Breaking Bets section.
