Currently atop the Premier League goal chart with 19 seasonal strikes, Robin Van Persie is odds-on to claim a second consecutive Top Goalscorer award at 4/5.
But whilst the Manchester United striker has undoubtedly looked as lethal as ever this season, he may be best avoided to land the gong.
A better option can be found in 9/4 chance Luis Suarez, who needs only one goal to match Van Persie’s league tally for the season.
And with the added playing time he is certain to be afforded between now and the end of the season, the electric Uruguayan looks a highly tempting proposition.
Liverpool’s elimination from all European competition, as well as the FA Cup, means their sole focus is on league football.
Brendan Rodgers has called for a strong end to the club’s domestic campaign, and as such will opt for his strongest side in their remaining fixtures, of which Suarez is a focal point.
In contrast, United appear to have all but secured the Premier League title, and Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to shift his attentions to other ventures.
The Red Devils are poised for Champions League progression, and will also fancy their chances of a tilt at a first FA Cup in nine years.
Therefore, the Old Trafford outfit are almost certain to pick and choose which league fixtures to utilise Van Persie in, and rest him against lower quality opposition.
Meanwhile, the favourable nature of Liverpool’s remaining fixtures further cements the notion that Suarez is a preferable option in Top Goalscorer betting.
The Reds have still to play the worst three defensive sides in the top flight, and in their trip to Wigan next time out face a team that has conceded more home goals than any other.
They are also a side Suarez notched a double against earlier in the season.
Whilst that game is in progress meanwhile, Van Persie is almost certain to sit out United’s clash with Norwich at Old Trafford, in what looks a sign of things to come.
All things considered, the 9/4 price regarding Suarez being this season’s top Premier League goalscorer looks well worth investment.
