Stoke City have joined QPR in the race to sign Aaron Lennon from Tottenham Hotspur.

Mark Hughes was expecting a quiet day on the transfer front but has been forced into action after Peter Odemwingie suffered injury in the Potters’ 1-0 win over champions Manchester City.

The Nigerian international, a striker by trade, has been filling in on the right side of midfield for Stoke and now Hughes is targeting a move for Lennon in the final few hours of the transfer window.

The England international has been hotly tipped to join the White Hart Lane exodus to Loftus Road for a reunion with former boss Harry Redknapp, but Stoke believe they can tempt the 27-year-old to move to the Britannia Stadium.

Lennon, who has made 21 appearances for England, was not in Tottenham’s squad for the 3-0 defeat by Liverpool and has been deemed as surplus to requirements by the north London club.

Stoke are 13/10 with Ladbrokes for a top 10 finish and the signing of Lennon would be a major boost to their chances but QPR could be lining up alternative targets should they miss out on to former Leeds star.

Andre Ayew is the latest name to be linked with a move to west London with Redknapp hopeful of convincing the Ghana international to join the Hoops.

QPR, who are 1/2 with the bookmaker to avoid relegation, are also trying to bring Jermain Defoe and Sandro to the club before the 11pm deadline.
